Year of the Bicycle?
One good thing about high gas prices...they may be encouraging more people to consider bicycle commuting. And more people riding bikes means drivers will be more aware of bicyclists and perhaps those of us who ride already will be a little safer.
I've noticed more bikes on my commute to Boston as reported by this Boston Globe article, although I do take offense at the author's comment that
For bicycling enthusiasts - once a subculture of bike messengers, car haters, cash-poor students, and eco-activists - it's beginning to feel like a tipping point.
I didn't realize I was part of that subculture. I thought I was more of a "lycra-clad effete euro-poseur" on my road bike than part of a fringe subculture. :) Thanks, Boston Critical Mass for the email update about that Globe article.
Whether or not gas prices directly correlate with bike commuting is the topic of a thoughtful post at Jason Welker's wikinomics blog. I commented there about the additional factors I think go into the "rider calculus" for me at least.
